As I started with this site, I noticed a few things.

The spelling of keychain changed depending on the software I used. Sometimes it was “keychain“, other times it was “key chain“.

“Well”, I thought, “Which one is correct?”

So I did a simple test, tried out a few applications and websites and this is what I found.

The following considers “Key Chain” to be the correct spelling.

  • Evernote

  • LibreOffice

  • ProWritingAid

  • Dictionary.com

  • Merriam-Webster

The following considers “Keychain” to be the correct spelling.

  • Oxford Dictionary

The following considers both “Keychain” and “Key Chain” acceptable.

  • Microsoft Office

  • Grammarly

  • Reverso.net

Reverso.net is interesting because it has a spellchecker for both U.K. and U.S. spelling.

Curious, I wanted to see what people actually thought.

And the best way to find out is by a poll. A very simple poll that I asked of a few friends, family and co-workers.

How do you spell keychain? One word or two words?

And the result? 7 out of 8 said “Keychain”. One said “Key Chain” but wondered if it should be “Key-Chain

In conclusion, it seems that both spellings are correct. It is just a matter of which version of English you use. Or whatever app you’re is using.
