A person can be excused for getting so excited the first time they get their own key to put into a keychain. I was. Keychains are cool and you feel so responsible.
Overtime, the amount of keys one owns can become overwhelming, the key ring becomes bulky with keys. There is one, or two for the cars, the house, the mailbox, the office, your drawer and more.
When you stand up, your pants get pulled down to one side because of the weight, or your shoulders hurt from carrying your heavy shoulder bag. And you feel like a cow with bells around your neck as you walk. The keys jiggling and announcing to anyone within earshot of your approach.
And don’t forget those loyalty cards!
Soon you have a collection that weight 1/2 pound and more keys than you know what to do with. Worse, the set occupies your entire pocket or handbag. But why is this so?
It boils down to how a typical key ring works.
The key ring works by threading the ring through a hole in the key. This places the key at 90 degrees to the ring itself, creating a volume closer to a globe rather than a disk.
So what can you do?
Here are some suggestions.
- Take an inventory of the keys you have and decide if you need these. You may find you only need a few. I went through mine and found that I only needed 3 keys. The house key, the mailbox key, and the safe. The others I carried, I no longer needed. I do not even remember what these were for.
- Reduce the number of loyalty cards you have. These are light but take up plenty of space. You probably shop at one or two places. And most loyalty cards can now be installed on your phones and accessed through an app.
- Use a key organizer. An organizer like the Keyport All-In-One , KeySmart or Gear Infusion can reduce the volume your collection of keys occupy. It accomplishes this by aligning the keys in the smallest volume possible. Side ways. And you can still attach a chain to some of these models.
It is difficult to beat the price of a simple key ring. That is why these are so widely used. If you are disciplined, then the answer is to split your keys among multiple key rings, and just bring what you need. But keep the rest organized sensibly using a Wall-mounted key holder. Or a bowl.
